For past three years the cases of teen sex have increased in Jaipur and the whole of Rajasthan. According to pshycologist Dr. Lalit Batra, who practises at the renowned Sawaiman Singh Hospital, teenagers are watching porn films and porn sites from a very young age and are becoming a victim of mental stress at a very young age. In a candid chat, Batra speaks to TSI on the issue.

Q: What change do you see in the opinion of Jaipur teens regarding sex?

Dr Batra: Including Jaipur, the opinion of teenagers on sex in the entire country has changed drastically in past five years. Earlier, teens were not having knowledge about sex but due to media revolution the kids aged between 10-12 years have gown mature before time and age and they know all about sex. Having known about all the aspects of sex at such a young age is bringing a lot of change in the society and this change is bringing a lot of negativity amongst the teenagers.

Q: What is the main reason behind the curiosity of teenagers on sex?

Dr Batra: Media revolution is the main reason behind the increasing curiosty of teenagers on sex. Rise of co-ed schools and open enviornment in schools, tution and colleges has increased the urge of sex in these teenagers. Now, they have easy access to the porn sites and porn films than before and this what increasing the sexual urge of the teenagers.

Q: How are rave parties and drugs affecting the youth of Jaipur? Do you think it contributes in criminal activities?

Dr Batra: The rave parties and usage of drugs are definitely affecting the society and youth of Jaipur. While a few years back it was considered as a bad thing, today it is considered to be a status symbol and Jaipur is not untouched by this. I receive 8-10 problems every week that involves the issue of teen sex, or their relationship problems and in some cases these teenagers have already tried drugs or take alcohol once a week. Jaipur is now host to many BPOs and malls which have the late night work culture and this has resulted in the rise of sexual relations. To fulfill the materialstic demands of their partners, they are taking to crime like chani snatching and bike stealing. We help such teenagers by counselling them.

Q: How do you guide the teenagers who are badly embroiled in teen sex?

Dr Batra: After we hear the case study of teens, we offer them different counselling and medicines depending on their problems. We ask them to move past their relationship and give attention to their careers. We tell them about the right age to have a relationship and how to be careful regarding sexual relations. We build confidence in them so that they can move ahead in their lives.
