West Bengal Police on Monday fired in the air to disperse mob during a bandh called by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district. The trouble erupted when bandh supporters asked local shopkeepers and businessman, owing allegiance to Adivasi Vikash Parishad (AVP), to shut shops.

When the businessmen resisted the move, bandh activists clashed with them and set ablaze car and shops.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to all concerned sections to keep restrain. In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, Chief Minister also requested media not to sensationalize the issue while reporting.

Terai-Dooars Coordination Committee (TDCC) backed by GJM has called for an indefinite bandh in the Terai-Dooars region from today demanding inclusion of several mouzas (local land revenue areas) from Terai and Dooars regions of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts of northern West Bengal in the proposed Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA).

John Barla-led faction of the Adivasi Bikash Parishad also supported the bandh.

A large contingent of police has rushed to the spot to control the situation, sources said.
