Sher Singh Rana surrendered before the Dehradun police in connection with the murder of dacoit turned MP Phoolan Devi who was killed on July 25, 2001. Rana apparently bore no personal animosity towards Devi but had set out to avenge the merciless murders of those belonging to his community. The case is still pending at Delhi’s Patiala House court. Meanwhile Rana tired escaping from the Tihar jail in 2004, a case for which is being tried in Tees Hazari court even though Rana was granted bail after four years in this particular case. Bail however eludes Rana in the Phoolan murder case.
Rana is also in the news because a film is to be made on him by Jagjit Singh Walia. Scripted by Rana himself, the film will see tennis star Leander Paes play the lead. There has been talk of Ajay Devgan being interested in portraying Rana’s role. Phoolan ’s character will be essayed by Rituparna Sengupta. The film will be shot in both Hindi and English. The Rs 50-crore flick will hit the screens in 2012 and the profits will be shared by all those currently in jail.
