It wouldn’t be over-critical to stress that the title is misleading. While Paris and love conjure up colourful images of romance, the protagonist proudly declares his marital relation with Mrs Jones, his gun. With an obvious climax and a plot borrowed from the 8os, the movie fails to strike a chord even with the ‘action’ seeking audience. It slides from bad to worse with each passing scene, owing to the systematic destruction of any momentum built by the former. Enter Wax (John Travolta) and you know he has no regard for rules. He is a bald bad-ass thug-mouthed son-of-a-gun CIA special agent, roped in to eliminate the French underground drug mafia. His partner (Rhys Meyers) is a newly promoted, emotionally brittle agent who struggles to understand Wax’s rather butchery ways.
They form a “perfect team” according to Wax. In reality, they are the most desynchronised unit. Half way through, the plot continues to spiral down as an exasperated audience seeks something to cheer for. But the only thing going on seem to be more gunshots and the movie ends with a big bang from a rocket launcher. The explosive package of action would have been alright had the plot been a shade sharper but director (Pierre Morel) does little justice to the sinking Travolta. In fact, he decides on sinking the audience too!
