In “Babies on sale!” (TSI, June 7-13) Prasoon Majumdar has rightly analysed that illegal adoption routes are preferred by adoptive parents as adoption through legal route is a prolonged process and the adoptive parents have to wait for years. The discriminatory and non-uniform laws and the resultant asymmetries force the adoptive parents to go through non-conventional channels. But then, these illegal routes don’t promise these children a safe home and equal rights There have been numerous cases where adoptive parents abandoned these children after few months of adoption and also escaped any legal action. Children adopted through such routes are also found being sold in flesh trade market and are sometimes exported as slaves and bonded labourers to other countries. Over the past two decades, serious irregularities in international adoption have been found in various Indian states. Prasoon is right to conclude that in India, where there are hundreds of children on streets without any care, it is imperative to streamline the adoption process. For that the adoption laws should be drafted with a singular objective to provide home to every homeless child.
