NE under power crisis due to transmission problem

The entire North-East has been reeling under a severe power crisis since Wednesday evening due to a major transmission disruption between Eastern Grid and North East Grid in Assam’s western region.

"There has been a major power transmission disruption between Malda in West Bengal and Bongaigaon in western Assam, hitting the power feed for the entire North Eastern region, Assam Power minister A T Mondal said.

The Power Grid people were trying to locate, identify and resotre the fault, he said.

"Assam and other states have been hit badly. In Meghalaya, we are trying to rotate somehow," Mondal said.

Shillong has been under darkness since 5.30 pm.

Power Grid sources said the disruption could have been due to heavy rains and the fault might not be restored by Wednesday night.
