Passengers of the Howrah-bound Purushottam Express on Saturday escaped unhurt when the train passed over a rail fracture caused by a dip in temperature near Kharagpur Railway Station in West Bengal's Midanpore district.
Local people signalled the train to stop at Bhakrabadh near Kharagpur, but the driver was unable to do so, with 22 coaches of the 24-coach train passing over the rail fracture, South Eastern Railway sources said.
When the train stopped, the fracture on the line lay between coach 22 and 23, but no passenger was injured, they said.
Railwaymen from Kharagpur station repaired the track after being informed by the driver of the Purushottam Express.
The train left for Howrah at 5:58 am, the sources said. An inquiry has been ordered by the railways into the rail fracture caused by a dip in temperature.
