Multi-utility moss

 

 

Lichens are one of the most common hardy plants we see growing around country walls, as this cousin of moss can live even in places that lack soil. It is composed of two different types of living organisms: a fungus and an alga, leading to a lot of theories around their scientific nature and existence. However, they have been put to a lot of practical use; to make dyes for fabrics, as poison for the tip of arrows and as food for some animals including the reindeers who feed on them. Scientists also call them environmental watch-dogs as they are very sensitive to any artificial changes in the environment and react instantly.
