Movie Review: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Director Ayan Mukherjee’s follow up to his wonderful Wake up Sid, seems to do just that : play out the life n’ times of a woken-up Sid to a whole new landscape!  A consciously crafted hero-centric movie, it tells the tale of fun-loving & commitment-shy Bunny who, along with his whacky pals, Aditi and Avi, decide to go on a trip where the journey – not destination – is the driver.  They are joined by a politically-correct, studious & sober Naina who comes from another planet, rooted in [help!] values and a meaningful future.  The trip is wild and a good time is had by all, with Bunny the natural leader of the whacko group.  However, at the wedding of Aditi in romantic Udaipur – where the foursome unite after the trip, some time later – beliefs, feelings, sentiments, ideologies are reviewed and amidst conflicts & clashes of the heart & mind, bonding of the real kind happens, leading the local wit to describe the ending as you are my honey bunny moment!

A Rom-Com, Road movie, coming of age flick?  Take your pick but its bharpoor, full-on entertainment all the way!  The storm-centre is clearly the brilliant Ranbir Kapoor, who performs like a true-blue, classy, A-lister, never missing a beat.  His Madhuri jhatka is a true paisa-wasool number.  Deepika too matches his moves wonderfully well, demonstrating her post-Cocktail star value.  Aditya Roy Kapur & Kalki Koechlin, despite being reduced to sideshows, adds impressive punch.  However, finally it is clearly an Ayan-Ranbir show!  Their fabulous chemistry [goes even one step ahead of the Ranbir-Dippy vibes!]  comfort levels, understanding & interpretation of the narrative ignities the film and allows the audience to bogey with a super-duper cinematic experience that is fresh, fun, making Yeh jawani [such much] hai diwani!!
