Where do scientists get such ideas from? They tracked the movement of bank notes in the United States and used this model to infer that increasing human mobility is a key cause of the geographic spread of modern epidemics. Each bank note was tracked for less than a week. This model is quite similar to the way bacteria and viruses are transported across great distances and transmitted to other people.
