With the glory of the rare distinction of introducing the 10th Budget in the annals of Kerala history, Finance Minister KM Mani showed largesse in announcing projects and promises.
Mani proposed airstrips in all Kerala districts and earmarked Rs 50 crore to Kannur airport.
Mani allocated Rs 150 crore for Kochi Metro Rail and Rs 20 crore for Thiruvanananthapuram – Kozhikode monorail.
He also hiked the retirement age of state government employees from 55 to 56.
"We are the only state where state government employees retire at age 55, but given the life expectancy, which is the highest in the country (74 years), it is appropriate that the retirement age should be increased to 56," said Mani.
Mani earmarked Rs 50 crore for new dam on Mullapperiyar. In the background of resistance from Tamil Nadu against the construction of new dam and the case still pending in Supreme Court, the announcement is significant.
He earmarked Rs 224 crore for Vizhinjim project and Rs 220 crore for Vallarpadam.
He allocated Rs 300 crore for acquiring land for landless, Rs 100 crore for agriculture, Rs 100 crore for KINFRA and Rs 100 crore for coir sector.
Pension amount for journalists also raised from Rs 4000 to Rs 4,500 and Rs 1 crore allotted to regional scribes welfare fund.
For self-reliance in milk sector, Rs 35 crore also earmarked in budget.
