While yielding ground to coalition partners Congress for the setting up of Nazrul Bhavan, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced the decision to set up Kavi Nazrul Islam University at Churulia near Assansol – the birth place of the revolutionary poet. The CM made this announcement while commemorating Nazrul Jayanti at Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha.

The setting up of Nazrul Bhavan had run into choppy waters earlier. Initially the plan had been to set it up at the Indira Bhavan in Salt Lake – the erstwhile residence of former chief minister Jyoti Basu. The Congress had protested against the move as they felt it would be disrespecting the memory of Indira Gandhi to rename the building.

While conceding the point to the Congress, Mamata Banerjee refused to let others “dishonour the Govt’s efforts to pay tribute to Rabindranath, Vivekananda and Nazrul”. “We will establish Nazrul Thirtha comprising an academy, research centre and archives in Rajarhat instead of Salt Lake,” she announced.

Descendants of the poet like daughter in law Kalyani Kazi and grandson and rock star Rupam islam have lauded the announcement. Rupam went on record saying the move would help the country to better remember the fire brand poet.

Banerjee has been making efforts to pay proper tribute to the poet since quite some time now. After taking oath as CM, she founded the Nazrul Academi with poet Joy Goswami as President. She has also been conferring the Nazrul Award to luminaries like Feroza Begum and 24 others. The poet's birth anniversary festivities will go on in Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha, Rabindrasadan, Shishir Mancha and Mohorkunja for the next two days.
