Crores of people have welcomed 2012 with both delight and fear in their minds as prophecies about the doomsday have been doing the rounds. There can be a reason to believe in such predictions – the probability of an all out nuclear war or mishandling of nuclear weapons. The same fear during the Cold War era had led to massive underground constructions not only in the US Russia but and other countries as well.

The mysterious Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center – just 77 km away from Washington DC – has been one of its kind and is a resultant of this fear. According to an article by Christian Science Monitor, the US has spent $4 trillion on nuclear operations since 1945, of which $12 billion have been invested in constructing vast underground complexes to inhabit civilians and key government officials. The mystery was reassured when Russians were denied to open diplomatic office near Mt. Weather. Moreover, the Groom Lake in Nevada in US also has underground facilities that host researches on UFOs, secret aircrafts like Aurora or stealth and biological work. Many other US states including Arizona, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York etc. also have underground facilities. America has constructed hundreds of underground cities under DUMPs (Deep Underground Military Bases). More amazingly, they are even experimenting to cultivate crops in many of these underground facilities.

Russia is also not far behind. The Yamantau Mountain which is famously known as Russia’s Area 51 in the Urals remains a baffling place for the world. In spite of spending so much on intelligence, America still don't have much clue about this place. It still goes by the Russian version that it is Russia’s oldest and biggest nuclear labs. It has bunkers, garrisons and complexes which will not only rehabilitate civilians but will also help to run a parallel government if a nuclear crisis occurs. The country has planned to raise $180 billion to have state-of-the-art underground infrastructure this year. For the same reason, it is hosting ‘Tunnel & Underground Construction Russia & CIS Summit’ scheduled to take place in Istanbul on April 23- 25, 2012.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran revealed in 2002 that Iran had been operating underground secret nuclear programmes for 18 years. Later in 2006, The Telegraph reported that Iran was constructing underground complexes beneath the Abbas Abad district as the nuclear tension was escalating between the West and Iran. The main centre is connected to strategically important locations including state security forces, the energy department and the Organisation of Islamic Culture and Communications.

The world might or might not end in 2012 and the predicted doomsday might become just another fallacy but the fear will ensure massive underground constructions. Some will be reported and others will remain unreported.
