The state health department of West Bengal has cancelled licenses renewal of 300 hospitals for ignoring fire safety norms.

Considering the serious lacking of fire-safety norms and allegations of not having the proper fire-clearances issued by state fire service, the state health department has recently called off issuing licenses renewal for 300 health Institutions like Nursing Home, Corporate Hospitals and private clinic.

This comes after the December last AMRI fire incident that killed 94 people. Though the main reason behind the incident is yet to be traced but the initial investigations clearly illustrate that fire safety norms had been violated by the hospital management.

Explaining government’s this kind of approach, Biswaranjan Sathpahi, state health director said, “Our government will never put up with such hospitals those are still daring to play with people’s life. If any hospital found not having appropriate clearance certificate from fire services, the clinical establishment law would never allow them to run their business in future. For the time being we have rejected their license renewal application.”

And for those hospitals that got their renewed licenses before the AMRI incident, been also asked to submit their latest status report regarding fire-safety within three months to the concerned authority.
