Rich in tradition, picturesque plains diffused with hills and lakes… say Labas (hi!) to Lithuania! May not be a Switzerland but the biggest of the Baltic States is still where one can have that perfect holiday. Imagine a cross-swamped hill with thousands of crosses of all types – tiny and large, expensive and cheap, wooden and metal! At the 14th century Hill of Crosses, breathe in on a sight surreal and spiritual at the same time...
Even if it were action that gave you the real high, head for the capital city of Vilnius, the largest and easily the most beautiful city in the country – one that finds mention in historical documents dating as far back as 1323 A.D. and known for its architectural diversity. An incredibly small place for a capital city, Lithuania’s hub seduces visitors with astonishing old town charm. A UN World Heritage site, it is where one can find the only statue of Frank Zappa, the psychedelic musician and composer. The city also boasts of the National Museum that exhibits exquisite costumes, tools, weapons and jewellery…
Perched atop an island on Lake Galve, the old capital of Trakai is another popular destination. The island castle is a setting-stage for concerts and plays every year. Shopping in Lithuania can be great fun too. After all, shopping is the best excuse to explore the city! Stopover at Akropolis and Europa – large departmental stores where you could find everything under the Sun without too much of an effort! But the biggest attraction perhaps is the Amber Museum, an old palace in a lovely park. One can spend the entire day looking at the amber in every shade of yellow, white, green and red. Many pieces have amazing ‘inclusions’ of insects and small animals.
Well, Lithuania may not be the first of places to find mention on the roster of hot holiday spots, but not one to miss either!
