Union Environment Ministry has given the nod to double the capacity of Kochi Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal in Puthuvype. With this initiative, the total capacity of terminal will increase to 5 million tons.

Experts’ committee attached to the ministry took the decision when it met in Delhi. While the meeting insisted on facilities and devices for avoiding the environmental impact due to the enhancement of the capacity, the Petronet maintains that no more constructions are required for this and the only requirement is sophisticated machineries. Sources say that experts’ committee has agreed to this stand.

Union Environment Ministry had inspected the existing constructions and it was convinced by the project-connected people that new machineries would not upset the environmental situations. Ther project is likely to be commissioned by next year.

Petronet has already got the permission to lay pipelines up to NTPC project in Kayamkulam where the fuel at the moment is coal. If NTPC can run Kayamkulam project with LNG, it will reduce the total cost.
