Kerala: Atenative power | Kochi is thrilled |

With the world desperate to find a viable alternative to fossil fuels, India seems to havetaken a step in the right direction. The central government has chosen 48 towns as solar cities. In the process, Kochi has found a reason to smile, being one of the chosen cities. Most feel this will give a much needed fillip to the gloomy power scenario of the state capital.
“Kochi has got every right to be happy,’’ former Kochi Mayor and Kochi Corporation standing committee for town planning chairman, K J Sohan told TSI. He added, “As with all other renewable energy sources, the main problem would be storage. However, since the Union government is ready to give funds once a proper project proposal is submitted, Kochi can well avail the grants’’.
In the first phase, all government offices and offices of local bodies will be converted to solar power. With street lights selected for initiation in the second phase, the turn around in the power situation will be complete.
According to Sohan, “The Kochi Corporation spends about Rs 3 crore per annum for street lights and that too at subsidised rates. Actual rates are much higher, about Rs 5 more per unit. If this money can be saved, the corporation can utilise it for other constructive purposes.''
As a successful solar power system is expected to combat global warming, several government agencies are working for the fruition of the scheme. The Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) is the nodal agency of the state government for solar projects.
A committee of corporation councillors will be formed soon with the Kochi mayor as chairman for a quick completion of theproject.
With the abundant sunlight that the city receives, experts say the project has good chances of success. All it needs is a strong political and administrative will. If it succeeds, the project will achieve more than its immediate goals. Kochi citizens are praying that is the case.
