As a consequence of theĀ  appeal filed by a Kochiite, Sohan Verghese, against the change in the engineering college admission procedures, Kerala High Court stayed engineering college admissions in the state. Stay will prevail until another order takes place.

Court has asked the state government to give a statement before it on Monday. Sohan Verghese had questioned the single bench stand not to stay the admissions.

Over the past three decades, the admissions in these engineering colleges would take place on the basis of entrance examinations. However, this academic year onwards Plus 2 marks are considered too. Though government maintains that it is due to recommendations of the Entrance Examinations Reforms Committeee, Sohan Verghese's advocate argued that government had misinterpreted the rules of All India Council For Technical Educations (AICFTE).

Council rule stipulates that entrance examination marks constitute the sole basis for admission. Adding that Plus 2 marks are not applicable for medical college admissions. The new system for engineering college admissions is discriminatory and illegal.

Even though AICFTE had been founded as per the central laws, HC wondered how come State government take a stand against it. Court expressed its dissatisfaction about considering Plus 2 marks for engineering admissions.
