Police on Friday arrested Yasin Malik, Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and many others as they started their 10-day 'jail bharo' agitation against awarding of death sentences and lifers to Kashmiri prisoners by various courts.

Others who were arrested include Javed Mir, a factional leader of JKLF, Ahsan Untoo human rights activist and Parveena Aahangar, leader of APDP, an organisation of the parents of missing person.

“Yasin Malik and others may be sent to the Srinagar Central Jail this evening,” a police officer told TSI.

Earlier, the JKLF leader was leading a rally along with his hundreds of supporters from a local mosque after Friday prayers and soon after the agitators reached Badsha Chowk near city center Lal Chowk.

JKLF had announced its program to launch the ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ in a seminar entitled ‘Prisoners and our responsibilities’ last week, to protest a recent judgment by a J&K court which announced life imprisonment to the two former militants belonged to JKLF.

“Jammu and Kashmir is a political issue but the judiciary is being used to suppress the voices of the resistance leadership and its associates. Now judiciary is delivering life imprisonments after 23 years,” Malik had said in the Seminar organized by his party.

“The next phase of the ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ will be held on Monday,” an office bearer of the party told TSI.
