When Salman Khan first burst upon the scene and screen in the late eighties – Maine Pyar Kiya – he took the youngistan by storm!  Fresh, cute, sweet & stylish, he was the yuppies idol and every girl’s FRIEND! Well-toned and a cool dancer, he capitalized on the flavour of the day –Young Romance – and reeled of one success after another.  Along with Aamir & Sharukh, he formed a matchless troika that re-scripted film success in B-town.

Racing along, his real image change and formulae started when directors started heading South for re-hashing their hits and adapting it to Hindi remakes to rake in the loot.  Wanted started it and a host of others blitzed the screen creating a template that spelt GOLD!  Mixing action and hi-jinks with crazy comedy & romance and consciously avoiding any semblance of logic, the super hits – Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 1&2 – just kept rocking, with his fans begging for more!  Flamboyantly different from the Perfectionist Aamir or Romantic SRK, Bad Boy-cum-Robin Hood Salman created an image of the fearless, topless Hercules who is invincible come what may.  Any script, director, plot or co-star, Salman was a one-man phenomenon – much like the Big B at his prime – whose presence signalized a hysteria!

Alas, all good things must come to an end, what goes up must come down and Jai Ho could well mark this slamming on the brakes for the Salman Express.  Massive expectations, mega hype, déjà vu action – call it what you will – this film has deeply disappointed his fans everywhere.  A Rs.17 crore opening day – compared to Rs.30 crore in Ek Tha Tiger – spells bad news for the film with the second day also showing little improvement.  For good reasons.  There is nothing in the film except Salman Khan doing what he has done all his previous films … which could make it boring due to the fatigue factor.  No one else really matters, which is dangerous because it means total dependence on just one star.  Sure it worked in the past, but everyday is not Sunday and the hydra-headed monster called audiences is capable of chilling surprises – remember Rajesh Khanna and even the Big B’s Toofan & Jadugar, among other super duds?!  A preachy megalomaniac exercise playing out every cliché in the book, Jai Ho will recover costs, but has served notice to Bhai … Zara Dekh Ke Chalo!!

A 6-star yawn which his most ardent fan will disown, Jai Ho, go-go-go!!
