Govindchamy fasts for biryani

Rapist Govindchamy has been kicking up quite a storm in Kunnur Jail with his demand for better food. However, his demands might not be met with the king of support enjoyed by the Gandhis and Bhagat Singhs of the country. That is because his demand is not for basic healthy food but for biryani.

Chamy was convicted of assaulting 3 year old Soumya in a train while it was close to Vallathol Nagar Railway Station near Shornnur, Palakkat, on 1 February, 2011 throwing her off the train when she resisted and later raping her. The girl, who was working in Kochi in a small establishment succumbed to her injuries. Chamy was sentenced to death on the 1 November, 2011.

Chamy has always been a difficult prisoner. First, he threatened to commit suicide to enforce his demand to transfer him to from Kunnur to Thiruvananthapuram jail so that his relatives could come and visit him from Tamil Nadu. Now he wants an exotic menu every day.

He wants iddali or pongal for breakfast; biryani for lunch and porotta and chicken for dinner. He claims that he was put in bigger jail in Tamil Nadu and there he used to get the aforementioned food. While the authorities tried to calm him without giving in to his atrocious demands, he has remained immovable since Friday in his fast.
