Government should Step In

 

 

Hats off to Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri for his editorial “Service providers or rent seekers” (TSI, Aug 16-22). The way in which he has divulged the scenario of Leh is really phenomenal. Taking advantage of the cloud burst in Leh the airlines jacked up their fares and the tourists had no other option in that adverse condition. I completely agree with the editor that the government has a large role to play in this. The rent in the form of taxes the government charges from the airlines are so steep that it doesn’t leave them with any significant operating margin. Arindam’s view on this issue, though uncommon, sounds, credible.
