Give up violence: Gogoi appeals to Barua

In yet another effort to bring peace in the state, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday appealed to ULFA anti-talk faction leader Paresh Barua to give up violence and sit across the table to solve issues democratically.

"Violence has no place in our society. Those who have taken up arms, must realise the futility of violence for the

good of the state and the country as a whole," Gogoi said in a reference to Baruah, the 'commander-in-chief' of the outfit.

Gogoi had last week urged Baruah to join the politicalmainstream and form a political party on the lines of Team

Anna member and peasant leader Akhil Gogoi.

While the Centre is holding talks with the pro-talk faction of ULFA led by its chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, Baruah

has refused to join the peace process and continued to direct operations from his hideout on the Myanmar-China border.

The chief minister who was speaking at a function here to mark the 21st death anniversary of former premier Rajiv

Gandhi, said "It was during his tenure that the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18 years. Rajiv Gandhi believed that the youth could bring about transformation of the country."

Recalling his close association with the former prime minister, Gogoi said that Gandhi had paved the way for the

signing of the AssamAccord and the Punjab Accord.
