Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday denied any link with Athesham Malik, one of the two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) members arrested in New Delhi on Wednesday, saying he did not remember whether he had given a blessing letter to the man in question.

The Delhi Police claimed that bomb making material was recovered from the possession of the arrested duo and a recommendation letter by Syed Ali Shah Geelani was seized from Athesham, who had visited Pakistan in December 2011 where he allegedly learnt bomb making techniques.

According to reports, Athesham has told the interrogators that Geelani had given a recommendation letter to him for a Pakistani Visa.

“I do not remember whether I have given a letter to him (Athesham) or not. I give the recommendation letters to many Kashmiris who want to visit Pakistan for a genuine reason but before recommending them I usually check their passports and other relevant documents.” Geelani, who is in New Delhi for past few months to avoid harsh winter in Kashmir, told TSI.

“The government issues a passport only after a complete verification of the applicant. It means whoever gets a passport has nothing objectionable. And recommending such people for a visa should not be objectionable.” Geelani added.

According to Delhi Police, both the arrested persons were planning terror attacks in the Capital.
