Just a while ago, in an intense talk with a long lost friend, we touched a taken for-granted topic – the fate of gay life. The whole 'gay-lesbian-bi-sexuality' charade is anything but dumb. It is sung like a new song - pretty loud sometimes.
Barring the homophobes and the closet gays and some judgmental fools, I don’t see why most people should even be bothered by someone else's preference. After all, it is what they do or how they do behind closed doors.
I know a large percentage of people who do and often make that call. They say "it is against nature" while they constantly do the opposite-oppose love!
Mid way through our chat, I realized all this while I thought I love gays and I am totally pro them. But the harsh reality is that I love them because I didn't deal with them; they are barely a part of my immediate world. And the few gay men I know are serious darlings but I never once kept in account the lesbians. Especially the hardcore ones, who dress up in XL shirts, have short hair and behave like men. They can even be a little intimidating.
But the real question is "how do you know for sure?" And if you don’t know, then is it rude to assume one's sexual inclination on the basis of their body language and looks? And the last time I checked, jumping to such assumptions is borderline judgmental and that is definitely rude! I mean you could have one off day wherever you switch your stilettos for sneakers and skirts for sweatpants.
So, just because you don’t look girl like, is it fair to assume you are a tomboyish lesbian? There has to be a rulebook of etiquette one needs to follow in public places, especially if one's behavior could smell of bigotry or prejudice. I mean, even if you thought the laid back tomboy is a lesbian, why should your behavior toward her be any different than with the girl-next -door?
Pew Global Attitudes Project conducted a survey in 2007 where they asked 'Should homosexuality be accepted in society?" It had startling and almost appalling numbers-only 49% of Americans said yes while 41% opposed the idea. Middle eastern countries like Kuwait and Jordan had a mere 6% vote and Egypt was a disgusting 1%.India was no better, considering it claims on being really liberal, it had a 10% yes. Most of Asia and Africa had a low percentile in favor of acceptance.
Why do people feel the need to have their guards up around homosexuals? Is it because they could be sexually interested or would make inappropriate advances? So do many from the opposite sex. We women find that flattering to say the least. Then why be vary of gays? The thing to remember is that no decent human being will ever proceed without the consent of the other and if you think 'straight', they will most likely stay clear of you.
Laws are still very strict against them and they have a long and a tough journey ahead. Lets be a little accepting and throw in a little compassion and equality their way and the world would be happy and gay!
