In a planet that three-fourth is made up of water, ironically, it is this element that in the future would be reason enough for nations to wage wars. A BBC report in 1999 had predicted that in the next 25 years, water would be the single most important reason for wars in Africa with the potential flashpoints being in Nile, Niger, Volta and Zambezi basins. In case of Middle East too, it might replace oil and religion as the reason for future conflicts and the contentious regions might be around the Jordan River basin and the Tigris Euphrates Basin. While in the case of South Asia, a potential nuclear flashpoint region, the near half a century long strife between India & Pakistan over the Indus Valley region might get dwarfed by a potential apocalypse, which might erupt between the world’s two emerging military and economic powerhouse, with the Chinese attempt of diverting the Brahmaputra at its origin. If done, this would spell doom for whole of Northeast India and the ramifications could be catastrophic. And with the arsenal of nuclear stockpiles, Nuke-Day may not be far away.
