Flood situation grimmer in Assam

The flood situation has become grimmer in Assam as hundreds of villages have been inundated by surging waters of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in upper Assam districts.

More than 2 lakh people of as many as 15 districts are affected and around ten people have died in the state so far.

The worst affected districts are Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Kamrup (Rural), Sonitpur, Nalbari, Nagaon, Morigaon, Dhubri and Jorhat districts.

Earlier, the flood waters of river Bhogdoi washed away the road-cum-embankment connecting Nahatiya with Bormer in west Jorhat on Sunday.

The water levels of the Brahmaputra and almost all its tributaries have crossed the danger mark.

According to official sources as many as ten people have lost their lives in many parts of the state. Rescue teams have been sent to the worst affected villages. The villagers have taken shelter in camps set up by respective district administrations.
