The first interdisciplinary American Studies curriculum that will form the content for certificate and diploma courses was inaugurated in Lucknow on Monday by Michael Pelletier, the American Embassy’s Minister Counselor for Public Affairs.
This one of its kind curriculum reflects the work of a group of Indian professors who have specialized in American studies and has inputs from American specialists.
In an interview, Pelletier noted that the great advantage of the program was its adaptability. “This curriculum guide is the product of Indian professors from all over India, and is meant to be a support and guide for them to use as they and their institutions see fit. It can be adapted to the needs and realities of various institutions” he noted.
The curriculum includes the pedagogy for delivering the course and a DVD with a collaborative teaching module.
In a clear indication of the growing importance of American engagement with Indians, the launch was accompanied by the inauguration of the American corner at Lucknow’s 125 year old Isabella Thoburn college.
Pelletier put it down to “a concerted effort to reach out beyond the five cities where we have a physical presence in order to engage with Indians from all across the country”.
The corner will be a one stop resource centre for information about education, offer latest information and research resources on the US and promote cultural exchanges through speakers, artists and performers.
