This is the unofficial movie week. Quite a few of the most awaited movies of the year released this Friday in India. With five films fighting for viewership, the audience are spoilt for choice. None of these films had a clear edge over the others before release. The reviews though are not as different as the subject of each of these films. TSI brings you a made-easy of the flicks at one place. Make your choice. Such problems of plenty do not come your way every weekend.
Chittagong
Director: Debabrata Pain
Cast: Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Chittagong is the story of a school teacher who led a small group of school children in an uprising against the British during the 1930s. After playing a crafty professor in Rajneeti, Manoj Bajpai plays a revolutionary teacher in this one. Though the storyline is no different than Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se (2010), this film excels in terms of cinematic brilliance and powerful performances. Unless a couple of extra songs turn you off, do not miss this masterpiece.
Makkhi
Director: SS Rajamouli
Cast: Sudeep, Nani
Makkhi is the Hindi version of the Telugu blockbuster Eega. A man reincarnates as a housefly to avenge his own death and protect his love. Not everyday do you have such imaginative films. With a decent animation of the makkhi, full on entertainment and a willy and powerful villain in Sudeep, the film is a complete entertainment package. There is no reason why you should miss this one. Even if it means watching two flicks this week.
Aiyyaa
Director: Sachin Kundalkar
Cast: Rani Mukherjee, Prithviraj
Rani Mukherjee plays that girl with a heightened sense of smell and who lives in her own fantasy world of Bollywood. Though her family members live with their own set of eccentric problems, her real problem begins when the search for her groom begins. Aiyyaa one film in which the girl does all the lusting and the objectification is of the male. There is genuine humour in the movie. Watch it for Rani Mukherjee's performance. It is not one of those usual wedding dramas.
Bhoot Returns
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
Cast: Manisha Koirala, JD Chakravarthy
Bhoot Returns is touted as the return of Manisha Koirala to Bollywood. Fortunately not as the ghost. It being a Ram Gopal Varma film, you would have guessed the plot by now. Not much plot, to be direct. If horror films are what interests you, go for the ominous setting that Varma offers and a few genuine scares. Plan a show also if you are a fan of ageing Manisha Koirala who plays a mother.
Taken 2
Director: Olivier Megaton
Cast: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen
60-year old Liam Neeson plays a retired CIA agent who is now kidnapped after rescuing his daughter from the same situation in the prequel Taken. Quick paced action and some great chase sequences are the life of this film which otherwise does not have a very strong storyline. The positive aspect is that the 90-minute Taken 2 does not give you time for contemplation. If you love Bollywood action films, you will surely go gaga over this Hollywood one.
