This is with reference to your article on the Nandigram firings projecting it as a Stalinist-type strategy of suppressing the democratic voices of dissent. The CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress both should be held responsible for the bloodshed in Nandigram. Their passion for political supremacy culminated in this form of lawlessness. In Buddhadeb’s regime, I see a political face-off between the two competitive power groups. The main opposition of the Trinamool against the CPI(M) is the industrialisation process. After three decades of unquestioned rule in West Bengal, the CPI(M) lately seems to have been enlightened that industrialisation alone could mean more employment. The same party had been a saviour of peasants and industrial labour from exploitative hands of the capitalist. The changed global economic scenario has compelled them to be market-friendly. Unfortunately, the poor peasants’ illiteracy, ignorance and primordial loyalty to land couldn’t comprehend these dynamics and they fell prey to their faith in the old saviour.
