We live in a land of flying carpets and snake charmers. Ok, not really. But legends and folklore, particularly mythological, are as much a part of our lives as the sun and the stars. Maha Shivratri (the grand night dedicated to Lord Shiva) is yet another corroboration of the unfailing fervour of the faithful in our nation. One legend states that Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva got into a disagreement (so arguing is not a design of us measly mortals alone, huh!), each wanting to prove their might over the others. Lord Shiva, of course manifested as a huge lingam (phallic symbol) that the other two could not find a beginning or an end to. Ever since, Shiva temples are thronged by thousands, chanting ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ queuing to seek the blessings of the Father of ‘em all! (16 February)
