Criminal cases delayed

An analysis of the duration of time in years for which criminal cases against Lok Sabha MPs have been pending in a court of law has revealed that some of these cases have been pending for 10 years. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms, of the 543 MPs from the 2009 Lok Sabha analysed, 162 MPs have criminal cases against them with 76 having serious criminal cases like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and robbery against their names. The average number of years that criminal cases against MPs have been pending is 7 (until 2009). Guddu Premchand of INC has a case of murder pending against him for 29 years while Adhikari Sisir Kumar of AITC has a case of rioting and theft pending for 28 years. Recently the SC had directed that the criminal cases against MPs and MLAs should be completed within a year from the date of framing of charges by the trial court.
