Guwahati is fast becoming a very dangerous city to live in, with 133 dead already this month. Bodies have been recovered from various parts of the city.

The trend began at the very beginning of the month with the discovery of a human head, later identified as that of Majibur Rahman, by the locals of the Kamakhya-nursery area. This was followed the next day with the recovery of the mutilated body of a Bihari man in the BG area of Bamunimaidan.

To add to the crime spree, there also has been a kidnapping of a doctor on Tuesday from the Athabari area who was finally rescued from the Nalbari area on Friday.

Reacting to the huge number of murder cases and kidnapping cases in the city the DGP Jayanta Narayan Choudhury says “Most of the kidnapping cases are related with criminal motive. Some youths abducted well established person in the motive of demanding money from their family. Easy earning is their main intention .and in the murder cases it is seen that personal grudge, envy, enmity because of business are the main reasons. In most of the cases our police forces are able to identify the culprit.”

An MLA of ruling congress party and the present president of youth congress Piyush Hazarika says “We have already met our Chief Minister regarding the increasing number of crime in the city .he assures that number of security personnel will be increased very soon.”

Senior advocate and social activist Nekibur Zaman blames an inefficient police force and the huge social disparity that is rampant in the city. says “The most important factor is the government sponsored Syndicate Raj creates two sections in the society because of which one section becomes richer and another section is fighting for bread and butter . So, this poor section becomes aggressive and wants to earn easy money and so they involve themselves in these criminal activities.”
