Suspended IG R.K. Sharma (TSI March 24, 2008) has earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first IPS officer convicted of murder. He has been held guilty of hatching the conspiracy to murder Shivani, a newspaper correspondent, who had allegedly developed an intimate relationship with him and was threatening to expose him. The conviction nine years later may silence those who say that the police can get away with murder, but at the same time raises a very vital question: what happens when a senior policeman decides to break the law? The justice in criminal cases should not take as long as it has taken in the Shivani murder case.
