Thousands of commuters were stranded at various Metro stations today when a technical problem led to disruption of services on the busy Gurgaon lines during the evening peak hours.
Services on the Jahangirpuri-Huda City Centre corridor, which carries over seven lakh passengers a day, were affected during the busy hours due to a problem in the over head electrification between Green Park and Sultanpur stations, a DMRC spokesperson said.
Services were affected between 6.32 to 7.20 pm after a portion of OHE wire broke down near Qutubminar, he said. Due to the problem, from 7.20 to 8.20 pm trains were run on single line between Green Park and Sultanpur stations. After 8.20 normalcy was restored.
Thousands of commuters getting back home from their offices had a tough time as they were stranded at various stations on the corridor, one of the busiest on the Metro network, the spokesperson said.
The passengers, who were inside the train which got stuck, were deboarded. Kalpana Kapoor, a software professional, said there was utter chaos at Malviya Nagar Metro station when she went to board a train there and it looked like a crowded market with people milling around.
"I went to the Metro station at 7'o clock and the security personnel did not even allow me to enter the platform since it was already crowed. There was a technical problem on the metro and metros are not running for now," Kapoor said.
This is the first instance of a major delay in the Metro services in the past eight months. Last year, there were a few instances of delays on Metro after which the new age transport system put in place a mechanism to prevent such incidents.
