It is reported that in 2009 China applied for patents just second to the US, whereas India was lagging much behind (TSI, Aug 9-15). The R&D sector in India has been neglected, and we depend only on the outsourced work assigned by the US and UK. On the contrary, the Chinese engineers and scientists are finding country-specific solutions in the field of transportation, power, environment, and agriculture etc. An example is China's experiments with 3D straddler buses, which will carry 1200 commuters in its upper deck. This, they say, will not only lessen traffic jams, it will also reduce pollution and our dependence on fossil fuels, as it will run on electric and solar power. Moreover, China's extensive trade with African, other Asian and Latin American countries has helped it to counter recession ailing the developed world.
