The British government has plans to make violent and nuisance drinkers to either quit their habit or be ready to be put behind bars, according to new government proposals.

Offenders whose crimes are fuelled by drink could be handed sobriety orders by the courts, the Daily Express quoted Justice Minister Nick Herbert as saying in an announcement.

The orders will form part of conditional discharges or community and suspended sentences - and they will include taking regular breathalyser tests.

If offenders fail sobriety tests, they could face jail sentences. The orders will last for a maximum of 120 days.

Herbert said: "Alcohol-fuelled violence and criminality causes mayhem in towns and city centres.

"These new sobriety orders will allow us to tackle this problem more effectively."
