How did it feel to get a Padma Shri? Did you care when people raised questions about whether you deserved it?

It was a huge honour and was truly humbling. It’s one of the highest accolades in our country and receiving the award was an extremely emotional moment for me. There will always be people who think otherwise, in terms of whether they feel you deserve the honour, but then you can’t please everyone – everyone is entitled to their opinions. It makes for a lively debate!

You have been in the industry for 20 years. What in your opinion has made you last this long?

I guess it’s because audiences still put up with me! I’ll hang my shoes when they let me know they’ve had enough of me!

You started your career with action films and then went full-throttle into comedy. What comes easier to you and what do you enjoy watching more?

Nothing comes easy, as I don’t allow myself an easy ride in anything. Each role I sign must challenge and push my abilities. Believe it or not, comedy can be extremely challenging – the comic timing, the delivery, etc. Making people laugh is extremely challenging, just as action films challenge on a physical level. I’m a big fan of both genres and enjoy watching a good action movie as much as a laugh-out-loud comedy, and I gain inspiration from both on different levels.

You have worked with some of the finest actresses. Who do you think you’ve shared the best on-screen chemistry with?

Well, as you mention, many people say that Katrina and I share a great on-screen chemistry. I’ve had the opportunity of working with some formidable actresses throughout my career, and like to think that a good on-screen chemistry was delivered in each of those films.

How was it to work with your old co-star John Abraham in Desi Boyz? Was it as much fun as Garam Masala?

All I can say is that we are a pair and a half, our reuniting has been well over-due, and it has been absolutely brilliant shooting with him again. The respect we both have for each other’s bodies and professionalism is immense. We have very similar backgrounds, so it’s easy for us to get along so well. He has always worked damn hard in his career. The only thing that has changed about him as an actor is his growth, not only in his muscles but his maturity and dedication to prove he’s more than what meets the eye.

There has never been a time when you stayed away from the media. But did the controversies blown-up by the media ever bother you?

You know, over the years in the industry, I’ve developed a thick skin to such stories. It comes with the territory and you have to let it pass over your head. Obviously, it is hurtful when it involves people close to you. But again, you have to avoid giving it your attention and energy, as it simply isn’t worth it.

What all goes into maintaining your body?

A very strict daily health and fitness regime, which involves weight training as well as cardiovascular and martial art activity, coupled with a strict diet. My work-out regime involves a very early start in my gym, some weight training, followed by cardiovascular exercises and martial art activity. I spend two hours in the gym daily. My daily diet is usually very strict – lots of protein and vegetables. However, I love proper, home-cooked Punjabi food. I love sarson da saag, but luckily that’s pretty good for you, so long as you avoid the butter!

You don’t drink or smoke. How do you stay away from temptations?

You know, there is no question of temptation, as refraining from drinking and smoking is an integral part of my lifestyle and always has been. I certainly don’t feel any temptation or inclination toward either.

Has fatherhood changed you?

Absolutely – that is universal and I can’t imagine anyone who has become a father not being changed by parenthood. It is the most beautiful, amazing and blessed gift in the world.

Which are your favourite holiday destinations?

For culture, food, architecture, history and shopping, it has to be London. For a relaxing beach holiday, we love Goa.
