Black or White

 

 

“Racism is man’s gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.” At least that’s what Abraham J. Heschel had once said. Well, as for how grave a threat racism is, is not the most debatable issue at the moment. But it sure is grave when it is concocted diplomatically.

What with the much hyped speech by Senator Barack Obama on racism, peddling such a stir in the political aspect of the country; and as if that’s not enough, this supposedly phenomenal speech has clearly gifted him with the new status of the sure-shot candidate for the Democratic party…(Ahem! Much to the disappointment of Mrs Clinton, of course). To disagree with his pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright and to speak out the mind of the White Americans was surely a clever move by the Senator. But rumour is that the conviction with which the Senator spoke the words was not as strong as the impact of those words. Why was that? Didn’t he believe in those words or was he thinking that his pastor was after all right when he said “God damn America”. The blatant truth is that the Reverend actually made some sense when he was propelling Black Liberation Theology by means of Black Separatism. After all, isn’t that what the blacks want for themselves as well…a separate society for them where they can be free (of course, Obama would beg to differ considering the fact that he is on his way to becoming the first Black President of America)? What with the Blacks’ voting rights being put to question even after their free existence on the American soil for more than a decade and a half? The irony is that while on one hand America celebrated the Black history month in February 2008, on the other hand the Blacks’ voting rights expired in 2007 and is yet not renewed. What on earth is all this superficiality about? Being shrewd becomes a maliciously mean game when it indulges in back stabbing.

Well, America sure has to realise the Black community is more than just Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Forest Whittaker and Halle Berry or for that matter a handful of others, who believe they deserve more that the abrasive apathy. And maybe it's time the Senator obeys the Reverend more often!!!
