The Prime Minister's visit to Assam has been cancelled amid a steep rise in militant activity across the state by ULFA to show their strength as their Raising Day approaches on April 7.

The Prime Minister was supposed to visit Assam to commemorate the platinum jubilee of the Assam Assembly on April 7. However, the day coincides with the Raising Day of the militant organisation ULFA. In a show of strength for the upcoming occasion, ULFA has conducted several raids and explosions across Assam.

A CRPF vehicle was blown up by the organisation on Friday in the Dudhnoi area of Goalpara district. Three CRPF jawans were injured in the attack. Before this, grenade attacks have been carried out at the at Mathurapur and Dimou police stations of Sivsagar district of upper Assam day before yesterday. Though ULFA has not directly taken responsibility for the blasts, police suspect they were behind it.

Meanwhile, Arabinda Rajkhowa, the president of ULFA who leads the peace talks with the central government accepts that the activity of the group has been higher of late due to the Rising Day. “There may be some more disruptive activities on the occasion of the raising day,” he warns.
