After the name of a Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader figured as prime accused in the gang rape of a college girl, the senior leaders of the student body on Saturday demanded thorough investigation into the matter and justice for the victim.

According to the police complaint filed, TMCP leader Samyo Mondal is the prime accused in the case along with four others. It has been alleged in the report that the girl, first year student of the Government Polytechnic College, was invited for a birthday party by Mondal and his friends. At the party she was served drinks laced with sedatives and was gangraped by Mondal and his friends who are now absconding.

While talking to journalists, TMCP District president Ashok Rudra said, “It's absolutely disgraceful. We are strongly against such anarchy and that too in College campus. Whosoever is involved behind such shocking incident, has to be arrested. Police should take strong action against the group. If anyone from our party found involved into this, we demand nothing but absolute investigation and justice to the victim."

Additional Joint Commissioner of Asansol has confirmed the arrest of college security guard Bholu Yadav, who is among the five persons named in FIR. Four others, Mandal, Avik Ghosh, Bijoy Singh and Mithilesh Ojha, are still absconding.

Reacting on the alleged connection of Samyo Mondal in the case, Ashok said, “Yes we have come to know that allegations are there against Samyo Mandal, but he has already been sacked from the party. We demand justice and punishment for those responsible for the heinous act.”

However, the principal of the college Rituparna Bose has denied giving permission for a birthday party in the college campus and said, “Students didn't take any prior approval to organise any kind of birthday party in the college campus.”

Since TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has taken rein of the state as Chief Minister, there has been a steep rise in rape cases. Moreover, the TMC government has been accused of indifferent attitude towards investigations in such incidents.
