This refers to “Shortchanging the rural folks” (TSI, July 19-25). I would like to first thank Prasoon Majumdar for bringing out the shocking fact about inadequate medical facilities in rural areas. In fact it is a national shame that even after six decades of independence, the medical facilities in villages is far below the minimum acceptable limit. During my stay in village, I have noticed that most of the time the doctors are busy in private practice and the hospitals are virtually run by para medicos. There are certain rural hospitals where modern gadgets like X Ray, ECG machines are available but they are not being used due to non-availability of operators. Though successive governments have been very vocal about the villages but they have hardly addressed this important issue.
