As Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency votes in a by-poll on Wednesday, they script a history. Another political scion is set for rise at national stage. Abhijit Mukherjee, son of President Pranab Mukherjee is in fray from the constituency that has returned the father twice with record votes.
Interestingly, despite widened political differences with Congress at the Centre, Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress has not fielded any candidate from Jangipur. Deciding to give a free ride to Abhijit, the party claimed the ensuing local elections are far too crucial than the Lok Sabha by-poll where TMC has a narrow support. Apart from this, there is no denying the fact that the decion is out of sheer respect for the senior most leader.
However, TMC's decision to not field any candidate does not necessarily mean a cake walkfor the emergence of Mukherjee scion. The left parties are attempting their best to regain some credibility in the Congress stronghold after being thrown put of power by the TMC-Congress combination.
Abhijit, who had earlier worked in various public sector undertaking (PSU) such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), will have to prove that he is as efficient as his father.
Mukherjee scion started his political career in 2011 by contesting and winning from Nalhati assembly constituency in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Being one year old in the state politics, Abhijit does not have much to speak about himself in Jangipur.
Abhijit does stand a strong chance to win the by-election, not due to his work and image, but due to other prospects going in his favour.
Moreover, Murshidabad district under which Jangipur falls has always been a strong hold of Congress.
However, CPI-M has been trying all it can to scuttle Congress victory in Jangipur. CPI-M politburo member Biman Bose has accused Congress of inciting violence and creating an atmosphere of terror in the constituency.
