Researchers from the Department of Zoology, Aligarh Muslim University claimed to have discovered a soil-inhabiting nematode in Assam's Kaziranga National Park.
The team’s findings have been reported in a leading international journal 'Nematology' published from the Netherlands, university sources said.
The authors have named this new genus and species as 'Rhinodorylaimus Kazirangus' on rhinoceros which is the flagship animal at this National Park, they said.
Prof Wasim Ahmad, who heads this project, said that the North-East of the country, where the nematode has been discovered is one of the world’s most notable "biodiversity hotspots."
Nematodes play a very critical role in the soil’s ecosystem, he added.
