Alike yet different! Scientists have discovered that the possibility of species that look identical despite having a completely different set of genes may exist and that too in an umpteen number of cases. Earlier, scientists trying to curb malaria in Europe, found their task quite harrowing until they realized that what they thought was one species were actually six siblings, from which only three were capable of spreading malaria. Similarly, even the African Bush elephant and the African elephant are two such cryptic species. Unclear about how many cases of such species – that have been termed as cryptic species – exist, scientists have decided to examine all of the various species, as many of these hidden species could actually be endangered.
