A new system!

 

 

Referring to ‘Just another day in office’ (TSI December 3, 2007). Indian media, especially TV news-channels, are closely watching the minute-by-minute live commentary on Sanjay Dutt’s release from jail which will happen only after Mumbai’s TADA court conveys SCs verdict for an interim bail to the jail authorities. But what about thousands of non-celebrity prisoners in our country’s jails who have to wait for months and even years just to get a certified copy of the court’s verdict convicting them that they could file an appeal at the higher court for a possible bail? Courts should have a system where it will be compulsory to deliver judgment copies to all the concerned on the day of verdict in the court itself, abolishing cumbersome and time consuming practices of delivery of these documents only on being applied. This system will help abolish the malpractice adopted by some litigants to deliberately delay receiving the judgment-copies by managing dates for receiving the same.
