A blind system

Your special story “Nipped in the bud” shows how blindly the Indian judicial system functions, (TSI, June 7-13). A few days ago, while reading a news item about the release of Warren Anderson, the then chief of the Union Carbide, I (and many others may have) thought that the judicial system is still uncivilised in India. Just two-year imprisonment for causing more than 20,000 deaths and leaving many more maimed for life is a big joke. In Mohammad Maqbool's case, it's not only the malfunctioning of the judicial system but also the violation of the basic human rights. The Central government must do all it can to bring Maqbool's life on track. Be it the Bhopal tragedy or Maqbool's case, one wonders why it takes half of the lifetime to get justice in our country. What can a common citizen do to improve this system? In fact, more stringent laws should be made, so that innocent do not suffer at the hands of governmental agencies.
