When Singapore and Kuala Lumpur knew little than selling opium, a full fledged stock exchange was taking shape in the emerging city of Bombay. Established as “The Native Share & Stock Brokers” Association" in 1875 under a Banyan tree—the oldest in Asia—the exchange went on to become a landmark for Bombay both in physical and figurative terms. It was this stock exchange that helped her bag the ‘Commercial capital’ title
from Calcutta.
