1801 We all think that it was Bal Gangadhar Tilak who pioneered Ganesh Puja celebrations in early 20th century. Actually, by 1801, migrants from the hinterland had joined the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic Bombay and consecrated the now famous Siddhi Vinayak Temple. So, in a sense, the dormant devotion towards the deity Ganesha was revived by Tilak to mobilise nationalist sentiments. Incidentally, the Mumba Devi Temple was consecrated in 1675. For Hindus in Bombay, the temple remains the place to go in search of blessings and solace.
