13 killed as train hits vehicle in Odisha

13 people, including 12 females, were killed and 5 others were critically injured when a Rourkela bound intercity rammed into a vehicle (Auto), that was carrying the victims, while passing a unmanned level crossing at Khairpali outskirt in Sambalpur town on Friday morning.
The females (mostly minor) were all agriculture labourer and were going to work in near by agriculture field. Injured were rushed to the VSS medical college hospital of Burla with the help of police.
The train was detained for two hours due to the accident. Meanwhile, Dhanupali police registered a case and sent the body for autopsy.
The accident occurred after the train left Sambalpur city station at about 8.45 am. Soon after the accident locals assembled at the spot and started an agitation demanding a gate at the level crossing.
In fact, the locals have been demanding for man-gate since a long time. They blocked the route in protest against the accident as a result of which movement of the train on the route was disrupted. They demanded compensation to the deceased family.
However, they called off the agitation after the intervention of the district administration in the afternoon.
Senior police officer and DRM (Divisional railway manager) of Sambalpur railway division rushed to the spot.
“It was a tragic incident. The injured have been admitted in the VSS medical college hospital and arrangements have been made for their treatment. We have also announced Rs 5 thousand to the family of each deceased from the Red Cross to meet funeral expenses”, the Superintendent of the police (Sambalpur) Nikhil Kanodia said.
The Sambalpur DRM AK Gupta assured the agitators to construct a gate in the level crossing and to man the gate as soon as possible.
